What does “off label” mean? Is this type of prescription a scam?

Drugs are released with FDA-approved indications. That means that the drug is intended to treat a specifically indicated diagnosis or condition. However, providers who are licensed to write prescriptions are allowed to prescribe medications for “off label” purposes. An example could be prescribing Wellbutrin for someone for weight loss or for ADHD. Wellbutrin is indicated for treatment of depression, but is prescribed off-label for these other things and that is allowed.

This is relevant to Mounjaro because the weight loss results from the studies used to win FDA’s approval for the indication for T2D indicates to some providers that it may be prescribed off-label for weight loss. No one is doing anything wrong if this transpires. However, it may affect whether someone’s health insurance will assist them in paying for the medication.
